Program Requirements

Honors Academy Scholars must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 to continue participating in the program and maintain their scholarship.

To participate in the Honors Academy, students must attend New Student Honors Seminar, a no-cost, no-credit course, during their first year at Missouri S&T.  This seminar provides students an opportunity to meet distinguished teaching professors, introduce them to research possibilities at Missouri S&T,  and see presentations by invited speakers.  In addition, students can participate in social activities such as a formal gala banquet with faculty members and other Honors Academy scholars.

Once you have accepted our offer, the Office of Undergraduate Education will enroll the student in the no-cost, no-credit Honors Seminar.  (Transfer students may join New Student Honors Seminar during the Fall or Spring semester.)

To maintain eligibility, scholars must successfully complete one 3 credit hour honors course per academic year after their first year.

The project brings together honors scholars' preparation and education in a particular discipline or combination of disciplines. Course Work Requirements

What Makes a Course an "Honors" Course?

Scholars must enroll in and complete 12 credit hours of honors coursework. At least one course of the required 12 credit hours must be outside the student's major field of study, and no more than 3 credit hours may be individual study courses. (undergraduate research or special problems).

Honors courses are standard courses selected by an honors scholar interested in exploring more comprehensively the course topic by including an additional element with the instructor's support. Honors courses often require different work, such as a modified assignment, an experiential learning component, or an added or enhanced research opportunity. Honors courses do not necessarily require more work, and the workload might not significantly increase for honors scholars receiving honors credit.

Honors courses are sections of courses that are taught by honors faculty with a designated “H” that allows only honors students to enroll. These courses may be in designated “H” sub-section seats in almost any course and as honors-only courses or sections exclusively taught as honors for honors students.

By-Contract: Scholars may request an “honors by contract” course in almost any section.  Scholars should talk with their course instructor about the potential to make the course honors and the expected learning outcomes.  If the instructor agrees, honors scholars should fill out the honors-by-contract form and submit it to the Honors Academy. Additionally, scholars must submit an honors course contract completion form at the end of the semester to earn the honors course distinction on their transcript.
